Location: Northern Ethiopia
Goal: Raise $10,000 to build a sustainable clean water source in a community in Northern Ethiopia.
Working with charity: water
, a non-profit on a mission to bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries, we want to bring clean water to a community in Ethiopia. As part of its 100% Model
, every dollar we donate to charity: water goes directly into the field to fund the water project. In order to implement this project, charity: water works very closely with its local partner, the Relief Society of Tigray (REST), to develop locally appropriate solutions to water access, sanitation, and hygiene. Because much of Ethiopia has a high water table, our project will be a hand-dug well. The community will be heavily involved in the construction process, thereby providing them a strong sense of ownership over the entire project.
April 2016: $10,000 USD donated to charity: water and REST.
Summer 2016: REST obtains all permits and supplies, selects the location, hires local help, and begins work.
Summer 2017: REST completes status report as project nears completion, the community receives training on their new water source, and we receive the exact coordinates of the project.
Winter 2017/18: New water source is active, we receive the final completion report, and all the data is verified.
Why water? Because water changes everything. When a community gets access to clean water, it improves health, increases access to food, grows local economies, and allows children to spend more time in school.
