Vegetarian BBQ

Vegetarian BBQ

Bethany S.    As a lot of us are trying to eat less meat these days, I thought I’d share some ideas to keep those savory summer BBQ cravings satisfied with some yummy veggie recipes!  Sauces like this chimichurri can be a great burst of flavour to add to those simple BBQ veggies Marinate your Mushrooms like in this recipe and throw them on the BBQ. A yummy fresh and smoky crunch can be achieved with this summer squash You don’t throw these roasted potatoes on the BBQ but I think you can achieve better flavour in the oven and it’s still a great addition to the meal! For a delicious and bright side dish to balance all those smoky and savoury flavours you can whip up this yummy orzo salad   Let us know if you give any of these a try and if you have any recipes you love and would like to share in the comments below!    Photo by Hulki Okan Tabak on Unsplash

I Just Need Some Space: Headspace

I Just Need Some Space: Headspace

Bethany S.    With ongoing restrictions here in Canada that never seem to end, it feels that a lot of us are getting even more restless than we already were. Learning patience and to feel calm in moments of frustration like this are not always easy. That’s why I downloaded Headspace. Not only has it helped me feel more relaxed it has also inspired me to get moving or stretching everyday with their “move” mode.  I think if you want to become more mindful and a little more at ease with all the craziness in the world you should definitely consider doing a free trial to see if it’s a good fit for you! Meet Your Mat

Meet Your Mat

Rebecca L. Today at TC we’ve been discussing our favourite yoga mats. Some of us are just starting out, and some of us are dedicated yoga enthusiasts. But the hot topic today has been around which mat is the best for all our needs. Here’s what we came up with: 1.    The Everyday by B-Mat Loved by me because it is the best mat I’ve found for hot practice, sweaty flows and general high intensity training of any sort. I love this mat because it provides me with the ultimate grip, it doesn’t roll up at the ends and I personally really like the solid block colours. I don’t usually have to use a towel with this mat, even in the hottest of classes. I patricianly love the dark green colour as it’s easy to clean and has that earthy tone. https://byoganow.com/collections/b-mat-everyday/products/the-b-mat-everyday-4mm-ocean-green   2.    PROLITE by Manduka Another favourite from the team for similar reasons, as it this mat is also great for perfect grip in the hot studio. It’s comfy, durable, feels great and again comes in a nice range of solid colours. This mat is pretty lightweight in comparison to others, but for me, I don’t love the texture of it personally. https://ca.manduka.com/products/prolite-yoga-mat?variant=30194567675938   3.    The Reversable by Lululemon This mat comes highly recommended by so many people, and for great reason. It’s durable, designed for yoga lovers and it cleans well. There are lots of lovely pattern designs to choose from and I always see these mats in every studio. For me, I don’t love the grip and I find this mat slightly on the heavy side. https://shop.lululemon.com/p/yoga-mats/The-Reversible-Mat-5/_/prod6740115?color=3327&sz=ONESIZE   Let us know what your favourite yoga mat is in the comments.(absolutely not sponsored in any way, just a genuine endorsement)

Listen: In The Heights

Listen: In The Heights

Matt C. For a lot of people these days, hope goes a long way. Some hope I'm getting has come from a dig back into a special experience I had from seeing the Lin-Manual Miranda musical In The Heights on Broadway in 2010. I was re-inspired to listen to the original Broadway Cast Recording because of the trailer drop for the movie version of the musical, set to premiere in theaters and on HBO Max later this summer. I would encourage you to stream the soundtrack for some Latin and Hip-Hop inspired fun based on the experiences of the tight-knit community in Washington Heights, New York - but that just might spoil what is come on the big screen this summer! For now, you can enjoy watching the trailer on a loop like I have here, or just dive right in and take a big bite out of the Original Broadway Cast Recording on Spotify here.

Watch: Da 5 Bloods

Watch: Da 5 Bloods

Matt C. Spike Lee has spent his entire career making films that force America to confront its history, and how it's been told. His latest film is no different. Da 5 Bloods, a Netflix-joint, released last year, centers on Vietnam veterans. In the initial screenplay, the majority of the characters where white, but Lee and his cowriter Kevin Willmott purposefully rewrote them as Black soldiers. The inspiration behind the revamp is best told by Lee, himself: "The fact is that the majority of the films that dealt with Vietnam, the Black experience was not a part of the story," Lee told NPR. "When we got the script from the producer ... Kevin and I automatically knew what we needed to do. ... This would give us the opportunity to tell the story of the Black effort, the 'Bloods,' who fought and died in Vietnam." The highlight for me was Delroy Lindo's performance as Paul, a vet struggling with PTSD who ends up being the focal point of the story. You can stream Da 5 Bloods on Netflix here and watch the trailer here.

Camping Tips

Camping Tips

Bethany S.    Camping season is upon us and if you’re able to get to a local campsite this summer I have some suggestions for a satisfying overnight stay!  Make and pack ahead a large portion of pasta salad: here’s a quick and delicious recipe from Pinch of Yum. It’s a quick easy snack or meal when you’re not feeling like the same boring hotdog you had for lunch Stores easy in a big resealable bag in your cooler which is a great space saver   Hack your S’mores by making it with Celebration milk chocolate cookies The milk chocolate is built right into the cookie! And the cookie is the perfect shape! Magic.   Bring a couple of games like Taboo or Mad Gab When things dwindle down after your day of adventuring, games like these are great to keep things fun   Pack an all-natural bug spray that actually goes a long way like this one from Shoreline Body Co. Honestly this stuff packs a punch! I used this while working on a film set in Tofino and the mosquitos were a plenty. I was the only one not getting bit or bothered thanks to this amazing natural repellent. And bonus! No crazy smelling chemicals that seem to barely work anyway.    I hope you have a great camping season and if you have any tips you’d like to share, write them in the comments below!

How To Survive an Earthquake

How To Survive an Earthquake

Rebecca L. I have never experienced a major earthquake, but just a little one once many years ago. No major damage was done and just a couple of glasses smashed in the kitchen, but I realized I had no idea what to actually do if a major earthquake hit. The devastation that such an event can deliver is terrifying, and recently I came across a video that outlines some of the important steps to take if you ever find yourself in such a crisis. One thing that we can all do is identify a safe spot for ourselves and our loved ones to meet…usually you want to have 2, one outside the house (in the street or the yard) and another open space outside of the residential area like a local park, or field. Another good idea is to have a few emergency supply kits accessible in the house. Enough water and snacks for a few days, a first aid kit, flashlight and a radio are helpful. When it comes to the actual moment, the DROP, COVER and HOLD practice is outlined in this video. Anyone else who sometimes finds themselves lost in a YouTube hole, might also recognise this channel dedicated to surviving disasters. Check out the super intense episode on surviving an earthquake here:
